We were made very welcome at the SOS village which is one of two orphanages in Gambia. We were given a lot of information and our questions were answered. The visit was both enjoyable and emotional.
We started with the older children, in the photo taken in one of the classrooms, Vin and Beres were allowed to join the class...they are sat at the back of the middle row.
The very small babies have not yet been given names. They are newly found abandoned babies who have just left the sos hospital. It takes nine weeks for all the legal matters to be completed before the children are given names. There is always hope that the babies parents will be found...which is very rare.
As you can see the children share their bedrooms and it is their responsibilty to keep them tidy and the beds made from a very early age. The day room is also shown here.
Local women usually ones who are unable to have children care for the children. They are responsible for ten each. Which includes feeding, cooking,cleaning,and teaching including religion. They also ensure the children complete their homework. The mothers shown here look after the new babies up to about two when they move across into another house with another surrogate mother.
Also pictured here is Sophie who you can see was taken with one of the girls living there, they hugged each other as though they were lost friends.
