Our visits to the crater for the 1st of July ceremony blend almost into one.
We enjoy the evening before well aware of our early morning start. This year as with everywhere the numbers were reduced but the turnout was remained very good.
Apart from a problem with the speakers the ceremony went according to plan...the speakers were soon resolved...the cable being the culprit.
As usual the ceremony was opened by the loud bang of the maroon and the blowing of whistles. The piper then sets off on his journey out of the smoke and up to the cross. Where the usual standard bearers , the vicar and of course Richard Dunning {who without, the annual event would not take place] and the interpreter stood.
In turn everyone said their piece of poetry, prayer, their feelings and soldiers were remembered while wreaths were laid. The young girls sang...abide with me the most moving for me...especially as i had Roger a very dear friend of the crater boomed out at the side of me causing me and others around me to jump.
The young girls gave out the poppy flowers from baskets whilst the remainder were handed out by more friends......
