Orlando

Whilst working at JOFI i heard by chance about a small boy who had been cast out from his compound for being illegitimate. It is believed he is possibly three years old.

An elderly stick collecting lady took him into the compound where she lives. Together they spend their time collecting sticks. Orlando does not speak the language of this compound neither does he speak English.

Because Orlando does not belong to a family he receives the left over rice after everyone else and the other children have finished.

I was able to meet Orlando before we left on our last day and have arranged his sponsorship and for a uniform to be made for him. Once he has received treatment for an infection he appears to have on his scalp he will be able to start school.

Orlando eventually felt comfortable and safe enough to smile once he realised the photo on my phone was of him. And somehow as though he new after being encouraged to shake hands with both Vin and myself he gave us a second hand shake.
